Interpretation
One of the unique powers of Shree Hanumaan is He gives redress to the distressed who have been tormented by afflictions of any order. He can surmount any challenge in His quest to free those afflicted who call upon Him with devotion (Bhakti).
This is exemplified during his journey to meet Seetaa Maataa who was held in captivity. Before we proceed further, that Seetaa Devi who was abducted was really the Maayaa Seetaa, having exited the fire (Yogaagni) into which the original Seetaa entered.
Shree Hanumaan had to overcome ominous challenges as He made His journey to Lanka where Seetaa Maataa was kept against Her will. First, Surasaa (the Mother of snakes) presented herself out of the vast ocean and purported to devour Hanumaanji. As she opened her mouth and expanded her gape, Pawan Suta (Hanumaan – son of Pawan Dev) quickly assumed His small form (Anima Siddhi), sprung into and out of her mouth before she could close it. Recognising His knowledge, Surasaa allowed Him to continue His journey and blessed Him with success in His praiseworthy endeavor.
Pawan Putra Hanumaan’s next hurdle was His encounter with Simhikaa (a Raakshasi and sister of the powerful Hiranyakashipu). She attacked and destroyed creatures and beings who flew through the air but when she attacked Shree Hanumaan, He made light work of Her and she was destroyed.
The final major obstacle of Anjani’s son, Hanumaan, during that journey occurred on Lanka’s soil when he was confronted by Lankini, a formidable sentry of Raawan. Her redemption from a Raakshas form depended on a blow from a Vaanar and Shree Hanumaan stepped up to fulfill that mission.
These three major challenges of Shree Hanumaan took place in water, air and on land. In all instances, He was victorious against formidable opponents. This exemplifies the fact that He has the highly respected capability to get redress on behalf of those who take refuge in Him with Bhakti (Devotion).
